I heard an account that, at one time, one in ten people in Japan followed Tenrikyo.
In Tenri, Nara, lies Jiba, revered in Tenrikyo as the original place of human creation and the spiritual home of all humanity.
I visited Jiba and the birthplace of Miki Nakayama.
Miki was born into the Maegawa family in 1798, in present-day Sanmaiden, Tenri. A devoted follower of Jodo Buddhism from childhood, she married into the Nakayama family at thirteen by traditional Japanese age reckoning, with the understanding that she could continue her Buddhist devotions.
According to Tenrikyo tradition, in 1838, when she was forty—forty-one by traditional reckoning—a divine message was suddenly spoken through her during a prayer ritual:
“I am the God of Origin, the God in Truth. This residence has a destined connection. I have descended to save all humankind. I wish to receive Miki as the Shrine of God.”
Her family and relatives initially refused, but eventually accepted. In Tenrikyo, this marks her becoming the Shrine of God.
From 1838 to 1887—a span counted inclusively as fifty years—she followed this calling and devoted herself to helping others. She experienced approximately eighteen instances of detention or imprisonment.
Her official biography also recounts occasions when she was on the verge of taking her own life but was held back by the voice of God the Parent.
Tenrikyo tradition also recounts that, following God’s instruction to descend into the depths of poverty, Miki gave food, clothing, money, and even household belongings to people in need.
I also heard an account that eventually there was so little food in the house that not even a single mouse came near.
During this impoverished life, she encouraged her children with words such as:
“When you drink water, you can taste the water.”
Even amid a life in which almost everything had been lost, she found gratitude in being able to drink water.
Knowing the circumstances behind these words makes me look differently at the everyday things we take for granted.
Another of her teachings is:
“By saving others, you yourself will be saved.”
Turning our wish to be helped toward a heart that helps others—this teaching seems to speak to our lives today as well.
In the Ofudesaki, which she wrote herself, she asks us to reflect on the world as the body of God.
(Ofudesaki, Part III, verse 40)
Followers affectionately call Miki Nakayama “Oyasama.”
This is a journey to Jiba as the spiritual home of all humanity, reflecting on the heart of helping others.
