Therm-A-Rest XTherm NXT vs. the Original — Is the Upgrade Worth It?

If you already own an older XTherm, the question isn't whether the NXT is good. It's whether the changes are worth paying to replace a pad that still works. I tracked the R-value across every version, from 5.7 on my old Max to 7.3 on the NXT, using catalogs Cascade Design's customer service sent me, so this comparison is exact rather than guessed. The change that actually sold me is the WingLock valve: with the old one I'd pin the valve with my thumb, spin it shut with the pump sack still attached, and still lose air half the time after a long day. The NXT's one-way valve ends that. The honest cost is that the regular Max I owned, the lightest of the line, is discontinued, so if weight is your first priority the older pad can still be the better one.
