You can help us keep telling these stories at   / sbsk   Four years ago, I met Max, a DeafBlind teenager living in a rural area without access to the specialized education he needed. After his interview was published, this community raised over $200,000 to help his family move to Boston and sustain their new life there so he could attend Perkins School for the Blind. Today, we reconnect with Max as he starts his fourth year in the program. Max can now communicate with ASL when he is hungry, wants a drink, or needs to use the bathroom. He can tell people “no” or “stop” when he doesn’t want something. These skills give him more control over his daily life. He can express his needs and preferences instead of relying on others to guess. His family also has greater peace of mind knowing he is learning signs that people beyond his immediate family can understand. His newfound ability to use ASL fills Max with joy. His mom describes how he smiles and shakes with excitement when he communicates and someone understands. Saying “stop” might seem like a small milestone, but being able to communicate a boundary is an essential part of autonomy and living with dignity. Max’s world has expanded beyond communication too. He enjoys swimming, grocery shopping, and helping deliver mail. His family describes him reaching out to explore more, engaging in back-and-forth interactions with vocalizations, and growing in confidence. Access to knowledgeable DeafBlind educators, coordinated services, and continued support at home has given him opportunities to develop abilities his family once wasn’t sure he would have. Thank you to everyone who contributed to Max’s fundraiser. You provided him with access to the education and services he deserves.
