12 lost cities discovered underwater, from Egypt's "Atlantis" Heracleion to a pirate city that sank in minutes and the mysterious Yonaguni Monument in Japan. Real sunken cities, real underwater archaeology, and one that scientists still argue about.
For more than 2,000 years, Heracleion existed only in ancient books, until divers found its giant statues on the seabed off Egypt. In this underwater archaeology documentary we explore 12 sunken cities and ancient ruins under the sea: Thonis-Heracleion and Cleopatra's royal palace in Alexandria (Egypt), Pavlopetri, one of the oldest submerged towns in the world (Greece), Port Royal, the "wickedest city on Earth", destroyed by the 1692 earthquake (Jamaica), Shicheng, the Lion City under Qiandao Lake (China), the Roman resort of Baiae, swallowed by the Campi Flegrei volcano (Italy), Neapolis, lost to the 365 AD tsunami (Tunisia), the 9,000-year-old village of Atlit Yam with its underwater stone circle, the Seven Pagodas legend of Mahabalipuram revealed by the 2004 tsunami (India), the drowned ghost town of Villa Epecuén (Argentina), Dunwich, the medieval town that fell into the sea (England), and the Yonaguni Monument: natural rock or a man-made lost civilization? (Japan)
