When one carmaker owns a range no one else can match, a price war between the two biggest names in EVs turns into a footnote. Toyota just put a 1,000 km battery on a production line, and Tesla and BYD are still arguing over a $17,999 sticker. The number is real, but the chemistry behind it is not what most people assume. The cell is solid-state, a sulfide electrolyte with no liquid inside at all, which is why it packs denser. Lab cells reach about 450 to 500 watt-hours per kilogram, where the best packs in today's cars top out around 250 to 300. The breakthrough holds because Toyota fixed the interface that used to make these cells fade after a few hundred charges. The factory is in Himeji, a converted site built as the company's first solid-state line, with first vehicles planned for 2027. The first car to get it is a Lexus flagship priced north of $100,000, and the company's own target is to bring solid-state to 1.5 times the cost of a liquid battery by 2030. That durability is what makes the density worth having: the cell keeps more than 90 percent of its capacity after 2,000 cycles, and the degradation curve stays above the industry's 70 percent rule across a 300,000 km lifetime. The reactions show how much this rattles the two giants. Tesla answers with software and a cheaper battery build, but a Model 3 with FSD still carries roughly 341 miles of range. BYD answers with price, but a cheaper Seal still carries roughly 400 miles. Neither moves the one number that broke the market, and neither touches the wall Toyota built: more than 1,300 solid-state patent families, with Japanese firms holding roughly 40 percent of the 20,000 plus patents filed worldwide. There is also the charging problem, a battery built to add 500 km in minutes plugged into a DC fast-charger network made for the last generation. The leaked order sheets put the first 1,000 km car inside the band where Tesla's discounted models now sit, which is a statement, not a coincidence.
