Jeep Compass 2.4 4x4 Trailhawk Test Review

Like most of the niche brands on the SA market, Jeep has a small but loyal following. To the greater public, the Jeep name is legendary and synonymous with extremely capable off-road vehicles. The Compass is an interesting middle ground. It's a medium family SUV but it has 4x4 and even low-range plus carries the famous "Trailhawk" badge which means that Jeep are confident with it's go-anywhere abilities. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to go off-road during this test so that may have been a wasted opportunity. Viewed in the context of a medium SUV, the test vehicle provides plenty of space and a very high specification level as standard. Items such as adaptive cruise control certainly are always appreciated. USB ports and air-con vents in the rear are items that are appreciated and not always provided in this category. Powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4L 4 cylinder petrol engine providing 129kW and 229Nm through a nine speed automatic transmission. Performance is strong but fairly leisurely especially when compared to many new smaller turbo options. This is more a case of take life a bit easy and enjoy the cruise. The 9 speed automatic is smooth and seamless in general driving but does seem to hunt between ratios when cruising. It's not uncomfortable in any way but was very apparent to me when on a highway at the national speed limit. Fuel consumption for the test period of mainly urban driving was 10.6L/100km which sounds a bit heavy but I'm certain could be improved when escaping the urban jungle and enjoying the open road. The Jeep Compass is one of those vehicles that appeals to buyers who either want to be different (like myself) or who plan to venture off the beaten track sometimes and will make use of the proven off-road hardware and abilities.
