Dypdykk - Astrid Nyborg Berg

There is no warning. The whale breaks the surface directly in front of the ship, under my feet dangling between the rails of the upper deck. I let out a shriek. A Swedish lady tells me to stop screaming after I stopped screaming. I don’t dare to look away for a second to pick up my camera. But the world’s largest predator floats peacefully on the ocean surface for half an hour. I get accustomed to it. It doesn’t seem to mind us. We just kind of hang out for a bit. And then it dives. The whole entire 20 meter body turns in the water. It’s headed straight down. The tail folding itself into the air is the last I see of it. It’s headed 3000m straight down into the deep.
