This adventure started with a paddle through the tidal waters near Gargatha before reaching Metompkin Island, one of Virginia’s barrier islands along the Atlantic coast. Once we made it ashore, we spent the day exploring the beach, hunting for shells and sea glass, taking in the empty shoreline, and enjoying one of those places that feels completely removed from everything else.
