Matlala’s Entire Case Under Review — Fadiel Adams Challenges Masemola Charges Withdrawal

Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala’s Medicare24 case has taken another major turn. Just months ago, the discussion was about whether Matlala would accept an eight-year sentence after entering plea-and-sentence negotiations — before the court indicated that 12 years would be appropriate and the agreement eventually collapsed. Now the R228 million Medicare24 case involving Matlala and his co-accused is undergoing an NPA review. The NPA says the review panel is assessing the validity of the charges, whether legal requirements were followed and whether the evidence meets the minimum threshold required for convictions. The matter has been postponed to 17 November 2026 while that process continues. But there is another major development. The same review process previously examined the charges against suspended National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola. NDPP Advocate Andy Mothibi subsequently ordered those PFMA charges withdrawn after concluding that there were no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution. Now MP Fadiel Adams has approached the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria challenging that decision. Adams wants the withdrawal reviewed and set aside and argues in his court papers that the decision was not rationally connected to the information that was before the NDPP. That application remains a legal challenge; the court has not, at this stage, determined that Adams's allegations are correct.
