Dogs descended from wolves. That much everyone agrees on. The question scientists wanted to answer was which wolf. There are wolf populations spread across every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Each one has a slightly different genome. Scientists compared domestic dog DNA to all of them. The result was not what anyone expected.
One wolf population came up closer than all the others. But the bigger finding was what that closeness revealed about the wolf that dogs actually descended from, and why that ancestor is no longer found anywhere on Earth.
