After spending last weekend at Yarberry Campground in Lenoir City, near Knoxville TN we traveled a few miles down the road to experience Melton Hill Dam. Just like Yarberry Melton Hill Dam is a Vista Recreation Campground which was previously known as CampRRM. This is the third of their campgrounds we have stayed at. About a year ago we stayed at Loyston Point on Norris Lake, which is probably my favorite lakefront campground in the Knoxville area. Then we stayed at Yarberry last weekend, our site wasn't waterfront, but other than that it was a nice campground. We have been pleased with our stays at all these campgrounds. I will say that Melton Hill Dam probably has the most issues that I've seen so far out of these Vista Recreation campgrounds. #1 It was hard to find. I put it in mapquest and it couldn't find it, then I put it in Google maps and it actually pulled 3 different places up. Also once we got here, there were signs saying that it was Melton Hill Dam, but absolutely zero signs showing where the campground was. However, I must have passed 4 signs pointing to the Receiving dock for the power station. Now to be fair, I did end up finding it the campground in Google maps and used it, as my Garmin couldn't locate the address. They have very good directions on their website both coming from I-40 and I-75. If you go the way that they tell you to go, it is a lot easier to find and there are more signs along the way. I went in from the back entrance from a road called Buttermilk Rd. This was a little sketch with some lower tree limbs and a lot of curves. If you come from the directions they give you turn directly off of hwy 95 to Melton Hill Dam Rd, the drive is a lot easier. However, once you get in the campground, the confusion isn't over. You will go by a billboard with signs around it stating you have to check-in, and right past this is a split in the road. There is a building straight down on the left which is the office. There are signs in front of it stating that you can park there to check-in, but the road isn't very wide. This is where you want to go through. If you turn right you will be going up into the campground and bypassing the office. I will say that the staff here has been very nice and helpful during the check-in process. The next issue that is pretty evident early on is that the campground is built on the side of a mountain, which inherently brings issues. In order to get to your site, there will be some maneuvering. I was told to drive right past the office and turn around in the parking lot, and my 30 ft fifth wheel was just barely able to clear the turn. Then I had to go up into the campground and it was very obvious that a lot of people drag their tails going up this path.
