HOW TO RECAST A BADLY DAMAGED WINDOW SILL | Step-by-Step Repair Tutorial In this video, I show you how to repair and recast a badly damaged window sill using cement, reinforcement and simple building techniques. When a stone or masonry windowsill has deteriorated, cracked or broken away, it doesn't always need to be completely replaced. With the right preparation and materials, it may be possible to rebuild the damaged section and restore the sill to a strong, neat and weather-resistant finish. This is a practical, step-by-step guide to repairing a badly damaged exterior windowsill, from removing loose stone and preparing the existing masonry to building the shuttering, reinforcing the repair and casting a new cement surface. Whether you're a builder, DIY enthusiast or interested in building restoration, this tutorial takes you through the process and explains the key stages involved. 🛠️ STEP-BY-STEP WINDOWSILL REPAIR 1. Remove all loose and broken material Knock away the loose, cracked and deteriorated sections of the existing windowsill. Remove any material that is no longer securely bonded, creating a solid foundation for the repair. 2. Clean and prepare the surface Make sure the window frame and surrounding area are free from dust and debris. Grind down the remaining stone to create a strong, stable and relatively flat surface where the new repair can bond securely. 3. Apply a PVA and water solution Brush a PVA and water solution over the prepared masonry and allow it to become tacky before proceeding, following the requirements of the products being used. 4. Install screws for mechanical reinforcement Drill holes along the front of the existing sill, install suitable wall plugs and screw in several screws. These provide additional mechanical anchorage for the new cement repair. 5. Create a galvanised wire reinforcement structure Form a reinforcement structure using galvanised wire. This helps provide tensile reinforcement within the repair and supports the new material. 6. Build the plywood shuttering Construct shuttering around the damaged windowsill using plywood. Use wedges to support the underside panel securely and shape the mould to the required profile. 7. Seal the shuttering Apply silicone to gaps in the shuttering to help prevent cement from leaking out during pouring and ensure the new sill can be formed properly. 8. Create a drip channel Glue suitable beading to the base timber, approximately 2 cm in from the outer edge, using Mitre Fast glue and activator spray. This forms a drip channel beneath the sill to help water drip clear of the wall rather than run back along the underside. 9. Mix the cement Prepare a 3:1 cement mix and add a suitable waterproofing admixture according to the manufacturer's instructions. Mix thoroughly to achieve a consistent material suitable for filling the shuttering. 10. Pour and consolidate the cement Pour the cement mix into the prepared shuttering, working it into all the corners, gaps and recesses. Use controlled vibration to help the mix settle and reduce trapped air pockets. Take care not to disturb the reinforcement or shuttering. 11. Level the new windowsill Level the cement so that the repaired section meets the existing sill neatly. Maintain the appropriate fall away from the window so that rainwater drains outward rather than collecting against the frame. 12. Remove the shuttering Allow the cement to harden and cure sufficiently before carefully removing the plywood shuttering. Follow the cement manufacturer's curing guidance rather than relying on appearance alone. 13. Fill and finish Use Toupret filler, where suitable for the substrate and intended application, to correct minor surface imperfections. Once dry, sand where appropriate and prepare the surface for painting. 14. Paint and complete the repair Apply a suitable exterior finish to complete the restoration, protect the repaired surface and leave the windowsill looking neat and professionally finished. 🧱 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN In this tutorial, you'll see how to: If you're searching for how to repair a broken window sill, how to recast a windowsill, how to repair damaged stonework, cement windowsill repair, masonry restoration or exterior building repairs, this video walks you through the process from start to finish. 👍 If you enjoy practical building tutorials, masonry repairs and restoration projects, please LIKE the video, SUBSCRIBE to the channel and leave a comment with any questions. Thanks for watching! Important: This tutorial demonstrates one repair method. The suitability of recasting depends on the condition of the original sill, the cause and extent of the damage, the materials involved and the security of the surrounding masonry. Choose compatible materials and appropriate reinforcement, and allow the repair to cure fully before finishing. #WindowSillRepair #MasonryRepair #BuildingRestoration Music by -    / @superlofiworld
