After exploring Osho’s abandoned American city, Rajneeshpuram, and the small town of Antelope in Oregon, we continued our road trip towards Portland. But before reaching the city, we decided to spend the night camping beside one of the most famous rivers in the United States, the Columbia River.
In this episode of Nomadic Indian, we experience another beautiful side of America, far away from the crowded cities, skyscrapers and busy highways. Travelling in Sunty Bhai’s black Mercedes Sprinter camper van has given us the freedom to explore places at our own pace, cook our own meals and spend nights surrounded by nature.
The Columbia River is one of the most important rivers in the Pacific Northwest. Stretching approximately 2,000 kilometres from the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia to the Pacific Ocean in Oregon, it has played a major role in the geography, history, trade and development of this region.
For thousands of years, Indigenous communities have lived along the Columbia River, depending on its waters and especially its salmon runs for food, culture and trade. Later, the river became an important transportation route during the westward expansion of the United States.
Today, the Columbia River is also famous for its massive hydroelectric dams, including the Grand Coulee Dam and Bonneville Dam, which generate electricity for millions of people across the Pacific Northwest. The river flows through some of the most spectacular landscapes in America, including the Columbia River Gorge, where enormous cliffs, volcanic formations and dramatic valleys reveal the geological history of the region.
One of the most fascinating things about this landscape is how the Ice Age floods helped shape the Columbia River Gorge thousands of years ago. Enormous volumes of water repeatedly rushed through the region, carving and reshaping parts of the landscape we see today.
During our 6,000 km American road trip, we have travelled through small towns, remote villages, national parks and some of the least populated regions of the United States. But experiences like camping beside the Columbia River remind me that sometimes the most memorable moments of travelling are the simplest ones.
A camper van, a beautiful river, a peaceful evening and the freedom to explore.
From the abandoned city of Rajneeshpuram to the banks of the Columbia River, our journey through Oregon continues as we make our way towards Portland.
Join us in this episode as we explore another beautiful corner of the United States and experience what it’s like to live on the road in America.
