How to Hand-Pollinate Pawpaws (Asimina triloba) for Optimal Fruit-set

Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a native North American fruit tree and the only temperate member of the custard apple family. It is an ancient tree that is fly-pollinated, so if we leave pollination up to Mother Nature, we can get an inconsistent fruit set. Here’s how I hand-pollinate my pawpaw trees in order to get more fruit. Clarification: I only pluck the FIRST male flowers of the year from the trees because I KNOW these had no other flowers open to pollinate them when they were female. After that, I use a small yogurt lid and brush the pollen into it. This way, if it was fertilized when it was female, I'm not accidentally removing the fruit.
