Twenty dragons were alive in Westeros when Viserys the First died in his sleep. Two years later there were four. This is the whole of the Dance of the Dragons — the complete Targaryen civil war, end to end, in four hours and nineteen chapters. It covers the entire conflict, including everything House of the Dragon has not yet reached on screen. A sourced telling rather than a retelling: the succession decided twice and honoured once; the two courts and the twenty years of good manners before anybody drew a sword; Rook's Rest, the Sowing, the Gullet, the Butcher's Ball and the duel above the Gods Eye; the night King's Landing came up Rhaenys's Hill and killed five dragons with hand tools; and a peace made between two children who had each been made to watch a parent die. Where the accounts contradict each other, the contradiction is named and you are told which way each chronicler leans. Nothing is invented. Where the record stops, so does this. One narrator, one unbroken telling, the same pace in the fourth hour as in the first. 0:00:00 — The room before anyone knew 0:09:37 — The ruin with room enough 0:21:33 — Fourteen years of good manners 0:34:50 — The oil and the stolen crown 0:45:22 — The errand south 0:55:17 — What the ratcatcher knew 1:05:10 — The bait 1:14:07 — The queue on the mountain 1:24:56 — The gates from the inside 1:32:27 — What the Lysene had learned 1:41:18 — Where the gold went 1:49:40 — The fourteenth day 1:59:01 — What they would not give him 2:07:30 — The crown of black iron 2:15:54 — Up the hill in the dark 2:29:51 — The Arbor gold 2:39:05 — The wrong animal 2:50:19 — Six days 3:01:05 — What was left in the sky
