Output Transformers. What they aren't telling you.

This video is about single ended vacuum tube output transformers, but some of this information applies to transformers in general. Core material, winding scheme, core size, as well as shielding all affect the quality of an output transformer in a vacuum tube amplifier. Some feel as though you would get better sound without a transformer on a vacuum tube's output, but I disagree. For me the output transformer's function is exactly what I like on the output of a tube amplifier. I like them on the output of vacuum tube preamplifiers equally as much. I feel they sound better than any capacitor on the output of a vacuum tube preamplifier. They also allow you to control how a preamp/amp functions with regard to the output distortion signature of the output stage. Vacuum tube amplifier function is all about distortion; this is the plain, simple truth.
