Unboxing a brand new train set from 1950. This American Flyer #5009 DC powered Electronic Switcher set was essentially in mint like new condition. It provided me with the opportunity to present a rare look at an intact original train as sent from the A.C.Gilbert company. I hope to do a few more of these to highlight the continually changing factory shipping methods over the years and how American Flyer attempted to reduce costs, boost efficiency, and increase profits over their 20 year post-war lifespan from 1946-1966.
I hope you enjoy the unboxing and the little explanation of AC vs. DC sets in the early post-war years. Had Gilbert continued with their DC powered “Electronic Propulsion” campaign, it could have meant a completely different outcome in the S Gauge market over the years.
