The first Pilatus Porter ever built landed on a Himalayan snow saddle at 5,700 metres, then never flew again. The mountain made it famous, but it was never the reason the aircraft existed. This episode goes back to the 1950s brief at Stans, where Pilatus needed a civilian product to follow its Swiss Air Force trainers. It covers the short-field design that came from that brief, then the Dhaulagiri expedition, Air America, skydiving and the final aircraft delivered in 2022. Every role the Porter filled over 63 years traces back to four requirements: reliability, strength, short take-off and landing, and slow-speed handling.
