Forget the Axe. Two men in a German shed built a firewood machine that cuts a full cubic meter of logs into stove-ready firewood in minutes — controlled from a wireless tablet.
The WeSt Brennholzsäge (Brennholz = firewood in German) was built by Hubert Weber, a locksmith, and Markus Stanggassinger, a farm machinery mechanic. "WeSt" comes from their initials. Instead of a circular saw, they chose a band saw: a thin loop of steel that wastes far less wood as sawdust, slicing logs cleanly to stove length. The operator runs everything from a wireless tablet — set the length, start the cut, stand wherever you want.
SPECS & DETAILS:
Machine: WeSt Brennholzsäge (firewood band saw)
Builders: Hubert Weber & Markus Stanggassinger, Germany
Saw type: band saw (thin kerf = less sawdust waste)
Throughput: approx. 1 cubic meter cut to stove length in minutes
Control: wireless tablet
Feeding: manual (hand-fed)
HONEST TAKE — WHO IS IT FOR?
One fireplace at home? This machine makes zero financial sense — you'd never cut enough wood to justify it. But if you fell dozens of trees and sell firewood by the truckload, the WeSt turns your slowest, most miserable job into minutes. The catch: every log is loaded by hand, so the machine is only as fast as the arms feeding it. And it's a shed-built machine with no dealer network — not a mass-produced product.
Is it the best firewood machine out there? For a small firewood business, it's one of the smartest designs we've seen: simple, fast, built by men who actually cut wood. For everyone else, it's just deeply satisfying to watch.
