Do you keep waking up around three in the morning, wide awake in a silent house? In old Japan that hour had a name, ushimitsu-doki, the deepest part of the hour of the ox. In this video we walk through nine gentle Japanese habits for the night and the morning that may help you sleep more deeply after sixty: morning light, a short early nap (hirune), less time in bed, an early light dinner, warm sayu water instead of caffeine, dim andon-style evening light, warm feet with a yutanpo, a cool sobakawa buckwheat pillow, and what to do when you wake anyway. These are everyday habits, not medical advice; if you snore loudly, stop breathing in your sleep, wake many times to use the bathroom or feel low every day, please talk to your doctor.
