Chandler Halderson's Mother Texted Him About a Parade. There Was None.

July 2021. Chandler Halderson told the Dane County Sheriff's Office that his mother and father had left before dawn with an acquaintance he could not name, to drive north to the family cabin at White Lake. The next day he sat in an interview room and described that week in extraordinary detail. The dinner he cooked for his father. The film the three of them watched. The ladder he put across the stairs so the dogs could not get up. The cornbread on the counter. By then, detectives had already found his father in a field outside Cottage Grove. What finally breaks it open is a small-town calendar fact. In the report he filed, he said his mother had texted him on the fourth of July about a parade. White Lake holds its parade on Memorial Day. There is no parade on the fourth of July. When a detective showed him that, he said: "So, well, maybe there is now." He never confesses. He ends the interview by asking for a lawyer. The recording runs one hundred and six minutes; this film is twenty-nine of them. Every second of audio in this film is a real recording from the case file — the interrogation, the jail calls, the bodycam footage and the sentencing hearing.
