Hurricane Isaias is strengthening over the Gulf of Mexico as the northern Gulf Coast prepares for a potentially dangerous landfall late Friday, October 9, or early Saturday. The storm became the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season on October 7, setting a record for the latest first hurricane of the season. Forecasts warn of storm surge up to 7 feet, damaging winds, torrential rain and possible tornadoes.
Hurricane warnings now cover coastal areas from Mississippi into Florida's Panhandle, including Mobile, Pensacola, Destin and Panama City Beach. Dauphin Island has already experienced tidal flooding, while mandatory evacuations are underway in parts of Okaloosa County. Officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to complete preparations before conditions deteriorate.
Heavy rain could bring 3 to 7 inches across the northern Gulf Coast, with isolated totals near 10 inches. Powerful surf, widespread power outages and flash flooding are additional concerns. The storm's impacts could extend far beyond landfall, with saturated ground near Jacksonville, coastal flooding around Charleston, and rain spreading toward the Tennessee Valley and Northeast.
In this video, we examine Isaias' rapid intensification, the record-setting start to the hurricane season, the storm surge and evacuation threats along the Gulf Coast, and the wider risk of flooding and tornadoes across the Southeast.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
