Is aviation a luxury or a strategic investment for Africa's future?
In this episode of Random with Abalo Irene Otto, veteran aviation journalist Michael Wakabi shares insights from more than 39 years in journalism, including over 28 years covering the aviation sector.
Wakabi argues that although aviation requires significant investment, African governments should view it as critical infrastructure that supports industrialisation, trade, regional integration, and economic growth. He also explains why training aviation professionals is costly and how stronger regional cooperation can help reduce the cost of operating airlines and make intra-African travel more affordable.
This conversation explores the opportunities and challenges facing the aviation sector in Uganda, East Africa, and Africa as a whole, and why the industry remains important for the continent's development.
Interview recorded on 16 June 2026.
