ELIZA, the First Chatbot, Understood Nothing. People Told It Their Secrets Anyway.

In the mid-1960s, MIT computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum built ELIZA — the first chatbot — to show how shallow a conversation with a computer really was. It understood nothing: it scanned your sentence for keywords, swapped the pronouns and handed your own words back as a question. Then his secretary, who had watched him build it for months and knew exactly what it was, sat down to try it — and after a few exchanges asked him to leave the room. Psychiatrists suggested a program like it could handle "several hundred patients an hour." Weizenbaum was so disturbed that he spent the rest of his life warning us about what is now called the ELIZA effect: that short exposures to a simple program could induce "powerful delusional thinking in quite normal people." This essay is about why that effect is stronger, not weaker, with today's far more capable chatbots — the engineer who called one sentient, the users who grieved when a model changed — and three rules for using AI without handing it the jobs that should stay human.
