What is there to do at Mike Roess Gold Head State Park? If you really want to see old Florida and relax in nature, this is the place! It has a few beautiful hiking trails, picnic areas, swimming in the St. John lake (it was too cold for us). The canoes were down at the time we went. The wild life is definitely there! The deer came right up to me! We gave this state park 3 stars. Like Highlands Hammock state park, this park is very old and one of the first to open by the CCC. Due to lack of activity, it made this park less appealing. But, don't let that stop you from visiting at least once. The Ravine is 72 steps down to a beautiful creek. If I were my kids, apparently jumping jacks are needed during the hike, but I needed breaks along the way. Fishing was a bit of a challenge. You can only fish in the Big Lake Johnson but the short lines are covered with grass and Lilypad's. Its habit for the fish so, its needed. You can also swim in that lake but it was very brown and cold when we went. Lots of scenery around as well. The morning I went to take a shower, 3 beautiful deer stood majestically Infront of me. My hands were full and I could not get a picture. Then we had squirrels brave enough to steal our food right In front of us and run off. The first night we stayed. We were cooking our steaks on the fire, coals really. We all took a bathroom break as a family and the dogs ate the steaks while we were gone. We weren't gone but 2 mins and the kids were watching the food. Watch the food get eaten. So that wasn't fun. So over all, it was a nice trip and we had a good time. We will have memories of what the animals did this weekend. Also, we did a small egg hunt. Michael hid the 6 eggs (3 a kid) with $5, $5, $10 and he lost one... we spent about an hour looking for it. Leave no trace behind!!!! Aka that's someone's money left behind. Now, we are very excited for the next trip retreat to Koreshan and Lovers Keys in Fort Meyers. We will be doing our first paddling then! See you then- Michael, Maelynn, Cameron and Hermione
