10 Massive Deep Sea Animals Found Where Their Bodies Shouldn’t Survive In two thousand and sixteen, a team led by marine biologist Julius Nielsen at the University of Copenhagen published a study in the journal Science that stopped the scientific community cold. They had been analysing Greenland sharks, a species known by the Latin name Somniosus microcephalus, using a technique called radiocarbon dating applied to the crystalline proteins of the eye lens. What they found was staggering. The oldest specimen in their sample was estimated to be approximately five hundred years old, with a confirmed range of two hundred and seventy-two to five hundred and twelve years. That single figure placed the Greenland shark firmly at the top of the list of the oldest living vertebrates ever documented on Earth.
