This track began a few years ago as an experimental poem written in archaic Middle English, an homage to the classic tales that I have always enjoyed: Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, The Song of Roland, etc.. As I was adapting the text, though, into a song and modernizing the language, a powerful thought struck me: the setting and the centuries change, but we all hurt the same. Heart ache and heartbreak know no era, whether a woman is standing near a medieval castle during the Crusades waiting for a knight who will never return, or a modern woman is standing in her kitchen staring at a coffee pot today. The language shifts over the centuries, but no matter the time or distance, we all must reach deep inside our own inner pith to find the courage to heal and become whole again. "Eall Ān / All One" is a progressive song that begins in a medieval castle with an ancient harp and seamlessly transitions forward into a modern indie-folk anthem - a testament that a woman’s resilience is completely timeless.
