Thirty years ago, Scotland was known for drugs. So much so that Trainspotting, a movie about heroin-addicted friends, became one of the country’s defining films. Today, Scotland has transformed its image from one of grime to one of tourism, mountains, and castles. Yet much hasn’t changed. For seven years in a row, Scotland has had the highest overdose rate in Europe. We wanted to understand why, so we set off on a journey through Scotland’s drug-ravaged cities and towns.
