A brand new electric car with six airbags, a rotating touchscreen and a self-made battery sells in China for about nine thousand seven hundred dollars. It is the BYD Seagull, and it has the boss of Ford warning that Chinese carmakers are an existential threat. We take it apart piece by piece: the motor, the lithium iron phosphate battery, the single windshield wiper, the steel, the cabin and the supplier network around the factory.
You will see what engineers from a Detroit benchmarking firm found when they dismantled one, why the price in Europe and Latin America is double the price at home, and how a brutal price war in China helps explain the sticker. We also look at the walls the United States has built, the surprising twist in Washington, and what Ford is quietly borrowing from China. Then comes a consequence almost nobody predicted, and it changes how to read the whole story.
