When Connecticut opened Norwich State Hospital in 1904, it was supposed to be different. Small cottage-style buildings. Fresh air along the Thames River. A humane alternative to the overcrowded asylum in Middletown that was bursting with nearly 3,000 patients. It didn't stay that way. Within fifty years, Norwich held 3,184 people across 900 acres, with one doctor for every 200 patients, underground tunnels connecting the wards, and a eugenics program that forcibly sterilized 559 people between 1909 and 1963. A 1939 state investigation confirmed what one senator said publicly: conditions stank to high heaven. During World War II, conscientious objectors recruited as ward attendants documented patients spending nearly 14,000 hours in solitary seclusion in a single month. This documentary covers the full story of Norwich State Hospital, from the idealists who designed it to the demolition crews who tore it down. The cottage plan that was supposed to fix everything. The eugenics sterilizations that Connecticut has never apologized for. The treatments that passed for medicine. The slow emptying of the wards. The thirteen years the campus sat abandoned. And the Mohegan Tribe's return to land that was theirs centuries before the first patient ever arrived. These are documentaries, not ghost stories. The documented record is darker than anything a ghost tour invented. ABOUT THE QUIET WARDS Behind the iron gates of America's asylums, state schools, reform schools, and sanatoriums lived millions of people the country chose not to see. The Quiet Wards takes you inside each one and tells its entire story. From the idealists who built it to the overcrowded decades that betrayed them, the treatments that passed for cures, the exposés that forced the reckonings, and the ruins, parking lots, and golf courses that stand over the graves today.
