The latest controversy began after Target listed a children's Halloween costume that social-media critics said resembled racist minstrel imagery. Target quickly pulled the costume and issued an apology, saying it was "offensive" and should never have been part of its assortment. But this is exactly where the bigger problem starts. Target has spent years trying to navigate America's increasingly polarized political environment. One day the company is being attacked by conservatives over Pride merchandise and DEI policies. The next, it's being attacked by progressives because it isn't doing enough on immigration. Target has managed to become a punching bag for both sides of the political spectrum. And I think Target needs to learn something from that: Stop trying to win the culture war. A retail company exists to sell products. It doesn't need to become a political institution. Yet Target repeatedly finds itself making apologies, changing product lines, responding to activist campaigns, and getting dragged into whatever the latest social-media outrage happens to be. The company eventually rolled back some of its DEI initiatives after facing massive backlash, while simultaneously facing criticism from the opposite side for doing so. Now immigration has become another battlefield. Activists and unions have organized boycotts demanding that Target oppose ICE operations and publicly take a stronger stance against immigration enforcement. Protesters have demonstrated at Target locations, including bizarre tactics involving repeatedly buying and returning salt because "salt melts ice." And that raises an obvious question: Why is a supermarket chain being treated like a political legislature? Target doesn't write immigration law. Target doesn't control ICE. And a private retailer can't simply decide which federal laws it will allow the government to enforce. What's especially funny is that Target has already discovered what happens when you try to appease political activists. Instead of making everyone happy, you can end up with both sides angry at you. That is exactly what we've watched happen over the past several years. Target promoted progressive causes. Conservatives boycotted it. Target scaled back some of those initiatives. Progressives boycotted it. Target tries to apologize over a controversial product. Another controversy appears. At some point, the company has to realize that constantly reacting to ideological mobs is a terrible way to run a business. And the Halloween controversy is a perfect example. Whether you think the costume genuinely resembled offensive historical imagery or think the backlash was ridiculous, Target's response was immediate: pull the product, apologize, and promise an internal investigation. That's not leadership. That's crisis management. In this video, I react to Cash Jordan's coverage, discuss the latest Target controversy, look at the competing boycotts surrounding the company, and explain why corporations should be extremely careful about becoming political symbols. Because once you start trying to please everyone... ...the activists on both sides eventually decide you're their enemy.
