Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari faced a critical strategy gamble at the Bahrain GP in F1 2026, starting on slick tyres in heavy rain when intermediates were the right choice. Hamilton dropped 60 seconds behind the field. Hamilton had told his pit wall "it's still wet," but Ferrari insisted the track would dry quickly and said they were already "in the crossover." Starting on slicks while rivals ran intermediates, he lost 12 seconds in a single sector and over 20 seconds per lap in the opening laps — falling to around P17-18 and a full minute behind the leader. By lap eight, GPBlog's telemetry analysis proved that slick lap times had finally matched the intermediate runners', confirming Ferrari's theory, but only after significant early damage.
Hamilton refused another strategy call on lap 5 ("I want to stay out, we made a gamble") and committed to a long soft-tyre stint. A late Safety Car coincided with George Russell's power-unit failure running third, helping Hamilton recover. He passed Isack Hadjar on lap 53 to finish P3, 4.919 seconds behind Verstappen. Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur admitted afterward "for sure, we were on the wrong side," while Hamilton joked, "I'm not going to the casino with the guys." The FIA's post-race random inspection selected Hamilton's car along with Verstappen's and Lawson's for checks — all three passed with no technical infringements reported.
