American History rarely gets more literal than a sound. Good old days used to carry the whine of a tiny engine three houses down.
The Cox .049 was a real engine small enough to close your hand around, built to a tolerance of 25 millionths of an inch and sold to kids for 3.98 dollars. One factory in Santa Ana out-produced every other model engine maker on Earth combined. This video traces its rise and its end in February 2009, when a safety law, disappearing fields, and electric motors all closed in at once and what that trade actually cost childhood and vintage American toy culture.
