Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas in 1492. Everybody learns it at school. But when he stepped onto that first beach, people were already standing on it, watching him. So we walk the story backwards, one arrival at a time: from Columbus to Amerigo Vespucci and the map that gave the continents his name, to Polynesian sailors who left DNA and a sweet potato, to a Viking who saw a whole continent and went home to his dad, to the Aztecs who found an empty city older than their own, and finally to a muddy lakeshore in New Mexico, where a group of kids left the oldest footprints we have.
