Intellectual Property and Sports

This book offers an in-depth exploration of the interplay between intellectual property (IP) law and the sports industry, delving into both the opportunities and challenges that arise at their convergence. Throughout its chapters, the book investigates how foundational IP rights need to adapt in response to rapid advancements such as digitalization and artificial intelligence, as well as the growing influence of global market integration. By examining these developments, editors Justin Koo and Jason Haynes provide insights into the evolving legal landscape and its impact on the world of sports. About the Guests: Justin Koo is a Tenured Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies, St Augustine. Prior to joining UWI, Justin was a Visiting Lecturer at King’s College London and a Teaching Fellow at University College London (UCL). Justin is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy of the UK, a member of Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale (ALAI), and a member of the International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP).  Justin’s primary research interest is focused on copyright law and he has published books and articles in the area, as well as drafted copyright laws for the Caribbean region. Justin also has interests in trademark law, sports law and entertainment law. Jason Haynes is Associate Professor of Law at the University of Birmingham, where he also serves as Deputy Head of Postgraduate Research. An internationally recognized scholar, barrister, arbitrator, and mediator, his research spans international economic law, sports law and IP law, and human rights, with a particular focus on the intersection of law, innovation, and global development. Before joining the University of Birmingham, Jason held academic appointments at the University of the West Indies and Durham University. He has also served in senior legal and advisory roles with governments and international organizations, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the World Bank, CARICOM, and the American Bar Association.
