India’s women’s cricket team clinched their second successive Asian Games gold medal, defeating Sri Lanka by a massive 147 runs in the 2026 Asian Games final on Tuesday. The victory also gave India its first gold medal of the ongoing Asian Games. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India produced a dominant batting performance after winning the toss, posting 216/3 — the highest total in Asian Games history. Smriti Mandhana led the charge with a brilliant 79 off 45 balls, smashing seven sixes, while Shafali Verma contributed a quick 48 off 29 balls. The pair put together a superb 99-run opening partnership off 60 balls, taking India to 59/0 in the powerplay. Mandhana took on the Sri Lankan spinners, including Sugandika Kumari and skipper Chamari Athapaththu, while Shafali also attacked effectively. Athapaththu conceded 19 runs in her over, including three sixes. After Shafali was dismissed attempting a reverse sweep, Harmanpreet Kaur made 19 off 17 before being caught at long-off. Mandhana was then dismissed in the deep while attempting another slog sweep. Richa Ghosh provided a sensational finish, smashing 48 off 22 balls with three sixes and seven fours to take India beyond the 200-run mark. Chasing 217, Sri Lanka struggled from the outset and were bowled out for just 69 in 15.4 overs. Captain Chamari Athapaththu top-scored with 29 off 21, but could not prevent India's spinners from taking control. Deepti Sharma starred with 3/6, while Shafali Verma completed an impressive all-round performance with 2/3. Shree Charani also chipped in with wickets as India completed a comprehensive victory. The result continues India’s dominance over Sri Lanka after their meeting in the Asia Cup final earlier this month. India recorded three dominant wins during the Asian Games campaign, while Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by 31 runs to claim the bronze medal.
