In this episode, we don't just explore Dal Lake from the outside. We actually stay on a traditional Kashmiri houseboat and take you inside White House Group of Houseboats, where we experienced the beautiful wooden interiors, traditional Kashmiri craftsmanship, the houseboat deck and, most importantly, the incredible location right beside the lake. We show you our houseboat, its location, the surroundings, the views, the interiors and what it actually feels like to stay on the water. 🛶 OUR HOUSEBOAT EXPERIENCE Our stay was at White House Group of Houseboats, situated in a beautiful part of Dal Lake. One of the biggest things we noticed was the location. Instead of simply choosing a houseboat based on its room or photographs, the location can make a huge difference to your overall Srinagar experience. From our houseboat, we could see the lake, shikaras moving across the water and the mountains surrounding Srinagar. The deck also became one of our favourite places to simply sit and experience the atmosphere of Dal Lake. We also take you inside the houseboat to show you the traditional wooden interiors, detailed ceiling work, Kashmiri-style furniture, carpets and the long corridor connecting the rooms. So if you're planning a Srinagar trip or Dal Lake houseboat stay, this episode should give you a much better idea of what to look for before booking. 🌊 DAL LAKE — THE JEWEL OF SRINAGAR Dal Lake is one of the defining landmarks of Srinagar and is often called “Srinagar's Jewel” or the “Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir.” The lake covers around 18 sq km, with a shoreline of approximately 15.5 km, and is closely connected with Srinagar's tourism, fishing and traditional water-based livelihoods. What makes Dal Lake so special isn't just the water. It's the entire ecosystem around it — shikaras, houseboats, floating gardens, mountains, lakeside markets and the everyday life of people living and working around the lake. The lake also contains floating gardens, locally known as Raad, which are an important and fascinating part of Kashmir's traditional relationship with the water. And then there are the famous shikaras — the traditional wooden boats that have become synonymous with the Srinagar experience. 🏔️ A LITTLE ABOUT SRINAGAR Srinagar is the largest city in the Kashmir Valley and one of the most iconic destinations in Jammu & Kashmir. From Dal Lake and its shikaras to the Mughal gardens, old city, traditional markets and surrounding mountains, Srinagar combines natural beauty with centuries of history and culture. The famous Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi gardens around Dal Lake are reminders of Srinagar's important Mughal-era heritage. But for us, the most memorable part was simply sitting on the houseboat, watching the lake come alive around us. 🌅 DAL LAKE IN SUMMER Our visit was during the warmer months, when Dal Lake has a completely different character. The longer daylight, green surroundings, colourful shikaras and reflections on the water make the lake incredibly photogenic. And as evening arrives, the atmosphere changes again — the mountains become silhouettes, lights begin reflecting on the water and the shikaras slowly turn into moving points of light.
