Larry Perkins won the Bathurst 1000 six times, raced in Formula One and became one of Australia's most respected racing engineers. Yet behind those remarkable achievements lies a story of friendship, controversy, heartbreaking loss and one of the greatest comebacks Mount Panorama has ever witnessed. For three consecutive years, from 1982 to 1984, Larry Perkins and Peter Brock were an almost unbeatable combination at Bathurst. Brock was the superstar. Perkins was the brilliant mechanic and engineer who helped make the cars winners. Together, they made Australian motorsport history. But their partnership would not last. As Brock became increasingly interested in a controversial device called the Energy Polarizer, Perkins questioned its supposed benefits. Their disagreement helped bring one of Australian racing's most successful partnerships to an end. What happened between the King of the Mountain and the man who helped build his winning cars? Perkins went on to establish his own racing operation and returned to Bathurst glory in 1993 alongside former motorcycle racing star Gregg Hansford. But just 17 months later, tragedy struck. Hansford was killed in a racing accident at Phillip Island in March 1995. That October, Perkins faced another extraordinary challenge. After an opening-lap collision caused a flat tyre, his Castrol Commodore dropped to the back of the field at Bathurst. With Russell Ingall alongside him, Perkins began an astonishing fight through the pack. What happened next became one of the most unforgettable victories in the history of the Bathurst 1000. This documentary follows Larry Perkins from his childhood in Victoria's Mallee, through his European Formula Three championship and Formula One career, to his partnership with Peter Brock, the Energy Polarizer controversy, his legendary Bathurst victories and his surprising adventures in the Australian outback. Do you remember Brock and Perkins racing together in the famous Holden Dealer Team Commodores? Were you watching the incredible Bathurst comeback in 1995? And who deserves more credit for those early Bathurst victories — Peter Brock or Larry Perkins? Share your memories and opinions in the comments.
