In 1931, Connecticut broke ground on what was supposed to be the future of mental healthcare. A 770-acre campus in Newtown with red brick Colonial Revival buildings, a working dairy farm, a chapel, a theater, and a bowling alley. It was designed to heal people in a park-like setting, far from the overcrowded asylum wards in Middletown and Norwich.
Within a decade, it was overcrowded too. Treatments included wrapping patients in wet sheets, injecting them with insulin until they fell into comas, and performing a hundred frontal lobotomies in a single year. An underground tunnel network connected every building on campus, and when patients died, their bodies were wheeled through those corridors to a morgue most of the outside world never knew existed.
This is the full documented history of Fairfield Hills State Hospital. From its founding in 1933 through sixty-two years of overcrowding, understaffing, and treatments that passed for cures, to its closure in 1995 and the brewery that now pours beer in the old staff dining hall.
This is not a ghost story. The documented record is darker than anything a ghost tour invented.
About The Quiet Wards:
Behind the iron gates of America's asylums, state schools, reform schools, and sanatoriums lived millions of people the country chose not to see. The Quiet Wards takes you inside each one and tells its entire story, from the idealists who built it to the overcrowded decades that betrayed them, the treatments that passed for cures, the exposés that forced the reckonings, and the ruins, parking lots, and golf courses that stand over the graves today. These are documentaries, not ghost stories.
