Learn how to make triphala tooth powder at home with Dr. Vasant Lad, using six kitchen herbs for natural gum care, fresh breath, and whole body health. Mitesh Raichada, senior faculty at The Ayurvedic Institute, joins Dr. Lad in the kitchen for this Medicine Everywhere episode. Together they make an Ayurvedic tooth powder from Dr. Lad’s family recipe, using roasted triphala, neem, cardamom, clove, edible camphor, and baking soda. Dr. Lad also explains why Ayurveda sees the mouth as a map of the entire body, from the connection between the gums and the heart to the way each tooth relates to a specific organ. When Dr. Lad was a child, his grandmother made the family’s tooth powder by hand. She roasted almond shells over the fire into a black powder and blended it with cardamom, clove, camphor, and a little baking soda. The family cleaned their teeth with their fingers, massaged their gums, and started the day feeling fresh. Dr. Lad brings that daily ritual back in a form any household can make. What goes into the formula: Triphala, a classical blend of three fruits, is the astringent base that strengthens the gums. Cardamom freshens the breath and, according to Dr. Lad, has a special affinity for the heart. Clove is warming and pungent and supports circulation in the gums. Edible camphor refreshes the mouth and helps keep harmful bacteria in check. Baking soda helps balance the pH of the saliva. Neem is bitter and antibacterial and helps maintain healthy oral flora. How to use it: Dry roast the triphala in a pan and stir constantly until it turns light brown and smells nutty. Blend it with the remaining ingredients. Place half a teaspoon on your fingertip, massage the gums, teeth, and palate, then spit out the saliva.
