Hurricane Isaias hit the Florida Panhandle near Destin on Friday night as a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds. By Saturday it was officially post-tropical, and it was still killing people. In this video I explain how a storm loses its hurricane label and stays deadly.
🌀 IN THIS VIDEO:
What post-tropical really means, and why the category number misses most of the danger
Why forecasters issued a rare flash flood emergency for Destin and Fort Walton Beach
Why Atlanta and the mountains near Asheville faced a flood risk hundreds of miles from the coast
The generator and carbon monoxide mistake that put a whole family in the hospital
Why Isaias is the latest first Atlantic hurricane of a season since at least 1905
How to stay safe: floodwater, downed power lines, outages, and storm cleanup
⚠️ SAFETY BASICS:
Turn around, don't drown. Never drive through floodwater.
Never run a generator in a home, garage, basement, or shed. Keep it at least 20 feet away, exhaust pointed away from the house.
Treat every downed power line as live. Stay at least 30 feet away.
Install a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm near where you sleep.
Follow your local officials until they say it's safe.
📌 Numbers change quickly in a disaster. This video reflects the reports available when it was recorded. Check the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) and the National Weather Service (weather.gov) for the latest updates.
⏭️ NEXT VIDEO: NOAA's winter outlook comes out Thursday, October 15. I'll break down what the strongest El Niño on record could mean for the season ahead.
