GTA 5 on PS3 was never a miracle. It was a magic trick, and you fell for it.
The PlayStation 3 had just 512MB of memory, split in half between the system and the graphics chip. Half a gig, total, for Grand Theft Auto V, one of the biggest open worlds ever made. So how did GTA 5 actually run on PS3? Rockstar didn't make the PS3 stronger. They made sure you'd never notice how much of Los Santos wasn't really there.
What we get into:
• GTA 5 PS3 vs PS4: the traffic, pedestrians and draw distance the PS3 couldn't handle
• Why cars and trees pop in, and why pedestrians vanish the second you look away
• How GTA 5 streamed Los Santos and predicted where you were heading
• What that character switch sky camera was really doing
• How the PS3's Cell processor had to be hand-fed data just to keep up
• Why the PS3's Blu-ray drive was so slow that GTA 5 forced an 8GB install
• Why the digital version reportedly streamed worse than the disc
• Why Rockstar released GTA 5 on PS3 with the PS4 right around the corner
GTA 6 is skipping last-gen consoles entirely. After seeing everything Rockstar had to hide on PS3, it's not hard to see why.
So was GTA 5 on PS3 Rockstar's greatest technical achievement, or its most convincing illusion? Let me know in the comments.
