Five thousand years ago, on the plains of the Indus, people built cities with straight streets, bathrooms in their homes and covered drains under the roads. Their merchants traded as far as Mesopotamia. They wrote in a script that nobody alive today can read. In Episode 1 of Globetrotter's Series 1, The Story of India, we travel from Mehrgarh, where people were farming and drilling teeth 9,000 years ago, to Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Dholavira, Lothal and Rakhigarhi. We look at how the cities were engineered, what a day in Mohenjo-daro might have looked like, the Meluhha trade with Mesopotamia, the Dancing Girl and the Priest-King, the undeciphered script, the real evidence for why the civilization declined, and what survives of it in India today.
