Toronto Ukrainian Festival Day 1: Desna Dance Troupe Dazzles with Copak On the evening of September 18, 2026, the 31st Toronto Ukrainian Festival kicked off in Bloor West Village. As the largest Ukrainian festival in North America, this year’s event marks its 30th anniversary milestone, expecting approximately 900,000 attendees over three days, with over 850 performers from Canada, the US, and Ukraine. On opening night, Desna Ukrainian Dance Company delivered a stunning Copak (Hopak) performance on the Bloor Street stage. Desna is one of the Greater Toronto Area’s most renowned Ukrainian dance companies, with over 50 years of history. Led by Yuri and Luba Grekov, both trained at Ukraine’s prestigious Virsky Dance Company, Desna is known for technically demanding choreography, exquisite costumes, and diverse music. Copak (also known as Hopak) is Ukraine’s most iconic folk dance, originating in the 16th century as a social dance among Zaporozhian Cossacks. Famous for its high leaps, squat kicks, and spins, it is popularly referred to as the “National Dance of Ukraine”. Desna’s performance exuded power and vitality, capturing the bold spirit of Cossack dance and earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. This year’s festival takes place on Bloor Street between Jane Street and Kennedy Park Road, featuring five stages with traditional and contemporary Ukrainian music, dance, choirs, and youth performances. Desna has long been active in Toronto’s Ukrainian community, performing regularly at weddings, festivals, and public events, and has toured the US, Europe, and Ukraine.
