CBG Plant Technology explained in detail: CSTR vs Plug Flow, feedstock selection, gas production and how to choose the right CBG Plant EPC Company in India.
Planning to invest in a CBG Plant or Bio-CNG Plant? Choosing the right technology and EPC company can be one of the most important decisions in the entire project.
In Part 2 of our CBG Plant series, we explain the major technologies used in Compressed Biogas plants and the factors investors should understand before finalising an EPC company.
In this video, we discuss:
✅ CBG Plant Technology explained
✅ CSTR – Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor
✅ High-Solids Continuous Plug Flow Technology
✅ CSTR vs Plug Flow
✅ How both digester technologies work
✅ Which feedstocks are suitable for each technology
✅ TS – Total Solids
✅ VS – Volatile Solids
✅ BMP – Biochemical Methane Potential
✅ HRT – Hydraulic Retention Time
✅ VFA – Volatile Fatty Acids
✅ Feedstock quality and methane production
✅ Gas yield and plant performance
✅ Advantages and limitations of CSTR
✅ Advantages and limitations of Plug Flow
✅ How to select CBG plant technology
✅ How to select the right CBG Plant EPC Company
✅ What to ask your EPC company before finalising the project
✅ How to evaluate promised gas production
✅ Why feedstock testing is important
✅ What investors should check before investing crores in a CBG project
CSTR vs Plug Flow — Which is Better?
There is no single CBG technology that is automatically best for every project.
Technology selection should depend on factors such as feedstock characteristics, solids content, methane potential, preprocessing requirements, plant design, operating conditions and the overall economics of the project.
That's why an investor should first understand the feedstock and project requirements and then evaluate the technology—not select technology only because an EPC company recommends it.
How to Select a CBG EPC Company?
Don't evaluate a CBG EPC company only on:
❌ Lowest project cost
❌ Highest promised gas production
❌ Attractive ROI projections
Study the technology, feedstock assumptions, reference plants, actual operating performance, gas yield assumptions, O&M requirements, guarantees, automation, commissioning support and after-sales service.
India's CBG sector is entering an important growth phase. The Government of India approved the unified GOBARdhan National Circular Bioenergy Scheme on 6 August 2026 with an outlay of ₹23,731 crore. The framework includes assured offtake, stable pricing, capital assistance, pipeline connectivity and access-to-finance measures for the CBG ecosystem.
The official GOBARdhan portal currently lists more than a thousand registered CBG/Bio-CNG projects, demonstrating the growing project pipeline in India.
