On the Mweya Peninsula in Uganda, several banded mongoose mothers give birth in the same den, most of them on the very same night. By morning the pups are mixed together, and no mother can tell which ones are hers, so every pup is fed and guarded as if it might be her own. Follow the smallest pup of the litter as she climbs into the light, searches for an adult "escort" when every good forager is already taken, chooses a clumsy young male nobody else wanted, learns his trick of cracking eggs by throwing them backwards against a stone, and survives a martial eagle and a snake with the help of the whole group.
This story is based on real research. Banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) live in groups of around 20 and breed communally; in most litters the pregnant females give birth together, usually on the same day (Hodge, Bell & Cant, Biology Letters, 2011). Because mothers cannot identify their own pups in the shared litter, care is spread evenly among them, a "veil of ignorance" that promotes fairness (Marshall et al., Nature Ecology & Evolution, 2021). After about a month underground, each pup forms a one-to-one bond with an adult escort who feeds and protects it (Gilchrist, Behavioral Ecology, 2004), and pups learn foraging techniques from their escorts (Müller & Cant, Current Biology, 2010; Sheppard et al., PNAS, 2018). Long-term data from the Banded Mongoose Research Project, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda.
Visuals in this documentary are AI-generated reconstructions of real animal behavior, based on published research and field observations. The pup in this film is an illustrative character. No animals were harmed, and no graphic scenes are shown.
