About this book: The Mysterious Mr. Quin is a classic short story collection by British author Agatha Christie. Plot summary (no spoilers): Mr. Satterthwaite, a sixty-two-year-old gossip who has spent his life watching other people's dramas from the front row, wants something stranger than a spectator's seat. On New Year's Eve at Royston, a country house with a troubled name, he senses trouble gathering around the guests. Their host bought the place after his friend Derek Capel shot himself under its roof, and no one has ever learned why. Alec Portal drinks too heavily and flinches at the mention of the dead man, while his Australian wife Eleanor, a fair woman with oddly dyed black hair, watches him with a look Satterthwaite cannot read. Then, as the wind howls at midnight, three knocks sound at the door. The late visitor is a thin, dark stranger called Mr. Quin, who claims his car has broken down and who once knew Capel. His arrival reopens an old question about a death that was never explained. In this first of a series of linked stories, an onlooker finds a companion who makes him look closer.
