For four months, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge visibly warned everyone that something was wrong. Drivers felt the roadway rise and fall. Workers watched waves travel along the deck. Engineers installed dampers and tie-down cables. Then, on November 7, 1940, the familiar gallop changed into a violent twist — and the bridge tore itself apart in a wind of roughly 42 mph. The usual explanation is “resonance.” But Tacoma’s real mechanism was more dangerous: the moving deck changed the airflow, and the altered airflow fed energy back into the motion. This self-excited aeroelastic flutter transformed the bridge and the wind into one coupled machine.
