Raised on the city's rich tradition of soul, gospel and contemporary R&B, the three members developed their sound singing together at local talent showcases and recording demos in small Detroit studios before signing with independent label RaSoul Records. Known for their tightly stacked three-part harmonies, streetwise image and emotionally direct songwriting, V.I.B.E. blended Detroit soul with the increasingly hip-hop-driven production that was reshaping R&B during the mid-1990s. Rather than positioning the group as a polished pop act, RaSoul developed V.I.B.E. around heavier drum programming, warm keyboards, deep bass grooves and vocal arrangements that allowed all three women to trade leads. During their early recording sessions, V.I.B.E. crossed paths with several young musicians and producers moving through Detroit's R&B scene, including Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson (Tim & Bob), Tony Rich, Mario Winans and Detroit producer Teddy Bishop. Tim & Bob's own history makes that connection particularly fitting: before their breakthrough work with artists including Boyz II Men and Monica, the production duo spent time developing their sound in Detroit and working among the city's musicians. V.I.B.E.'s 1995 debut album introduced the group nationally and established the sound that would define them: thick harmonies over laid-back grooves, melodic bass lines and hard, uncluttered drums. Among the album's standout recordings were “Somethin' You Need” and “Once Again,” the latter showcasing the trio's ability to move between intimate solo passages, conversational background vocals and full three-part choruses. Their sound belonged distinctly to 1995, a period when contemporary R&B was increasingly combining soul traditions with programmed drums, prominent bass lines and hip-hop production. That year produced records from artists including D'Angelo, Groove Theory, Brandy, Faith Evans and Total, while female vocal groups had become one of the defining forces in '90s R&B. Although V.I.B.E.'s original run was relatively brief, their recordings later developed a cult following among collectors of overlooked 1990s R&B and New Jack Soul, particularly for the group's vocal chemistry and distinctly Detroit character. Decades later, RaSoul Records began revisiting material from the group's original sessions, restoring and reimagining unfinished recordings while preserving their intended mid-'90s sound. “Once Again (1995 Reimagined)” represents that archival project—a song conceived in V.I.B.E.'s original era and finally presented as the record it was intended to become.
