Song of the Vulture by Sera Khandro (Part 1)

Song of the Vulture is a moving song by Sera Khandro, composed when she was eleven years old, one month after the death of her mother. Seated on the roof of her home, she sees a white vulture and recognises it as the soul-bird of a ḍākinī. Addressing the bird, she gives voice to the bewilderment and loneliness of a motherless child, recalling all that her mother gave her: her body, belongings, learning, faith and the opportunity to meet spiritual teachers. This film presents Tib Shelf’s translation of the opening portion of the song, narrated against an imagined landscape of loss, memory and the vast blue sky.
